Watch Penguins of Madagascar Online Free
The zoo is the perfect milieu, the animation is terrific and those penguins, you just can't beat those penguins. A "cute-and-cuddly-boys" cross between the Green Berets and the original "Mission: Impossible," they are the most free-flying flightless birds around.The great fuel of animation has always been absurdity. From "Looney Tunes" to "Family Guy," the comedy of ridiculousness is the backbone of big laughs. For fans of the two animated "Madagascar" movies, much of the attraction was that all kinds of characters had funny lines and charm. But the standout characters that generated the most laughs were the penguins and a crazy lemur.
On Saturday, Nickelodeon will launch what seemed like a cinch to anybody who loved those movies - a show of their own for Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, the "Penguins of Madagascar," (who get a prime-time introduction to their TV audience at 9:30 p.m., with reruns on Sundays at various times).
Initially just more nefarious characters at the Central Park Zoo - the launching pad for the "Madagascar" movies, where domesticated animals suddenly find themselves in the wild - the penguins took on a life of their own because their traits, voices and actions were so absurd. They considered themselves undercover commandos who were in the midst of real-time chaos every waking (and sleeping) moment but were prepared for it through elaborate training, abundant weaponry and fearlessness. Never mind that mostly they were not in any danger, they believed every sound, every new person or animal or changing situation meant conflict was right around the corner. So they assumed their normal position - martial arts poses.
Running, tumbling, sliding - they had a lot of moves in their arsenal, propelled by a spy theme of drums and orchestral swells. The gag was cemented by the voice of their leader, Skipper (Tom McGrath). McGrath, who directed the "Madagascar" movies, voiced Skipper as a temporary fill-in, thinking a real voice actor would do it later. He told TV critics recently that when he was doing Skipper he was channeling "my poor man's Robert Stack; Charlton Heston with a little Peter Graves thrown in."
The result was kind of a breathy pomposity, a penguin reaching for stature, his voice cool, his commands crisp. And, naturally, that just seemed ridiculously funny when you saw it on the screen. The penguins stood out in the movies because of that inherently incongruous conceit: tactically adept, small water birds who sniffed out nefarious plots and foiled them with a combination of kung-fu and MacGyveresque tenacity.
